The Maples Marauders football team is a member of the Winnipeg High School Football League (WHSFL). The team was built in 1981 by brothers Doug and Walter Krochak.
The idea of a football team for the Maples came about as a request from the student body. The class president took the request to the School Board, who passed it on to the School Superintendent Glen Nicholls. Mr. Nicholls asked division Phys Ed Consultant Al Kinley to look into the idea of a team for the Maples.
The year was 1980 and Walter Krochak was working in the Seven Oaks School Div. as a School Social Worker. He had been coaching in the Bantam League with the Clifton Cougars and the Nomads. The team at Clifton had folded and Mr. Krochak had a whole basement full of football equipment. When he heard that the Maples was thinking of having a team Mr. Krockak offered to donate the Clifton equipment to the new team. At about the same time The University of Manitoba was ending it's intramural football program and had a surplus of football equipment. With Al Kinley's position as line coach of the Bisons, the school division was able to get four car loads of equipment for the sum of a dollar.
That was how the problem of equipment was solved. An interesting side light is that the Maples original school colours were orange and brown. The football team wore the Clifton uniforms which were white, silver and black. The students voiced a preference for the silver and black, and the school colours were changed to the the silver, black and white they are today.
The problem of getting into the league were many. A major sticking point was that Seven Oaks wanted a division team with all three high schools having players on the team. Wpg School Division wanted it to be limited to players who attended the school who housed the team. Mr. Kinley's and Mr. Krochak spent a good deal of time attending meetings with Wpg School Div. and various voting members who would decided Maples entry into the league. With the support of the Seven Oaks School Board members and the Superintendent Maples managed to get into the Wpg High School League in 1981 and to draw players from all three schools. The next year Wpg School Div requested that all player must attend the Maples. Seven Oaks Div complied with this request.
Currently, the WHSFL consists of 32 teams, in three divisions: Currie, Potter, and Vidruk. In 2010 the league created a Junior Varsity Division. The Maples Marauders were proud to enter a team during this inaugural season. The Marauders will continue to field two teams in the future, one in the varsity and one in the junior varsity division.
The League teams begin practices in late August and play a seven game schedule. The Championships are played in early November. The players are students in the school in grades 9 to 12 and have four years of playing eligibility. In its 30 years in the league, Maples has won 2 championships, in 1994 and in 2003 ("A" Division).
